From now until Memorial Day you can visit Federal Hall National Memorial Monday-Friday from 9:00 am-5pm.In 1939, Federal Hall was designated a National Historic Site and its stewardship was transferred to the National Park Service. Sixteen years later, Congress re-designated it Federal Hall National Memorial to commemorate the inauguration of George Washington and the invention of American government.Pierre L'Enfant was commissioned to remodel the City Hall for the new federal government. The First Congress met in the now Federal Hall and wrote the Bill of Rights. George Washington was inaugurated here as the country's first President on April 30, 1789. When the capital moved to Philadelphia in 1790.
New Day at Federal Hall is the most consequential effort to recognize Federal Hall since it was designated a National Memorial in 1955. Our mission is to restore, transform and sustain Federal Hall as a living memorial to the American experience in self-governance.New Day at Federal Hall, a public-private partnership between the National Parks of New York Harbor Conservancy and the National Park Service, will connect these significant events of the past with today through transformation of the visitor experience. Our goal is to address three challenges: Education, Restoration and Financial Sustainability.
